Wise employment: Building a more scalable, resilient future in Azure

WISE Employment supports Australians living with disability and disadvantage to access meaningful work and achieve greater independence through inclusive employment services.

Overview

WISE Employment needed to move away from ageing on-premises infrastructure due to weekly system outages and critical platform risk threatening its operations.

WISE Employment selected Azured and Telstra as trusted partners to deliver a secure, cost-effective Microsoft Azure environment without operational disruption. The implementation project focused on enablement, giving WISE Employment the tools, visibility, and confidence to take ownership of its new cloud-based systems.

The Solution

The solution modernised WISE Employment’s environment with cloud-native infrastructure by replacing legacy firewalls, tightening access controls, and introducing a resilient virtual private network (VPN) to maintain connectivity.

Scalable Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) components were deployed alongside core identity and security improvements, creating a flexible environment that could be adjusted to meet compliance needs without adding complexity. Azured worked around internal constraints and timing pressures, adapting the delivery approach to minimise disruption and keep the project on track.

The Result

WISE Employment recorded improvements in system stability, performance and security across its core platforms within weeks of going live.

The business-critical Tunnel application, which was previously affected by frequent outages, now runs faster and more reliably, with fine-grained access controls reducing risk and improving compliance. Monthly infrastructure costs have dropped by up to AU$10,000 through the removal of unused services and better resource scaling.

Establishing a resilient, cloud-native foundation lets WISE Employment focus on strategic goals such as further cloud optimisation, retiring its hybrid identity solution, and integrating a new HR system, without being held back by legacy limitations.

Microsoft Azure was the obvious path forward for the business, though the team needed help to do it right. Azured designed everything around best practices, stood up the environment, and supported the team every step of the way. Most importantly, Azured gave the WISE Employment team the tools and knowledge to operate confidently in the cloud.
